Dear Sir or Madam:

In February of 2008 we enrolled our son Bill in the ER Card Program.  Bill is 24 years old, with intellectual disabilities and a severe seizure disorder.  Bill works as an advocate for persons with disabilities and is very active in Special Olympics.  Bill takes 3 anticonvulsant medications and has a vagal stimulator implant.

The vagal nerve stimulator implant is located in Bills Chest.  Bill carries a magnet with him at all times.  Persons with Bill, at the time of a seizure, can use the magnet to minimize the seizure by swiping the magnet across his chest in the area of the implant.  This sends an electrical impulse to Bill’s brain to help break the seizure.

On Sunday, April 20th, 2008, Bill had a severe seizure while we were at a Special Olympics Volleyball Tournament at Bryant University.  Bill was transported to the Miriam Hospital.  Upon arrival at the hospital we were asked about Bill’s medical history and medications.  We provided the nurse with Bill’s ER card phone number and ID number and the nurse was able to get the exact names, doses, and spellings of Bill’s medications.

As you know our ER card data also includes:

1. Instructions explaining Bill’s Seizures and what people who are with Bill should do to keep him safe during a seizure.
2. Bills family emergency contact information and health history.
3. Instructions explaining Bill’s vagal nerve stimulator.
4. A warning that Bill can not have an MRI because of his implant.

We were comforted by how well the ER Card system worked.  We know that if we were not with Bill, and he had a seizure, those with him, or medics responding to the call, could have all this information with a simple phone call.  The ER card system keeps Bill safe and allows him to be more independent.
